There are no miracles

A unique multiplayer action game with RPG and strategy elements, in which tanks play the main role, literally burst into the gaming industry and gained enormous popularity from the first months of its life. The developer of this effect - Wargaming- I didn’t expect it at all, but I quickly got over my surprise and began to actively develop both server capacity and the game itself. By the way, this is a Belarusian company that, thanks to its project, has become the largest developer of multiplayer games from the former USSR. But she is far from being a newcomer to the market, but a real veteran, which has become one of the secrets of her stunning success.

The official release of World of Tanks took place three years ago, on August 12, while Wargaming has been working in the field of game development for more than 15 years. That is, the development of the “tank MMORPG” was preceded by the release of several very interesting projects among connoisseurs (DBA Online, Massive Assault and several of its sequels, Galactic Assault, Order of War) and the accumulation of invaluable experience.

And World of Tanks itself did not appear instantly. The idea was born back in 2008, and the release of the finished product, as I mentioned above, took place only two years later. In addition, a lot has changed since then, from graphics, to maps, to the balance of power. Even the format of extorting money through micropayments has evolved into a more humane system Free-to-Win. But first things first.

About the life of PC games on Mac

Before moving on to discussing World of Tanks itself, it’s worth first launching it on a Mac, which is what we’ll do now.

There are two options for running PC games on a Mac. One of them is the use of virtualization solutions. For example, Parallels Desktop.

To describe briefly, this software package allows you to create the so-called virtual machine with almost any operating system inside, not just Windows. You can install Linux, MS-Dos, and a different version of OS X. In fact, the application creates a separate computer in RAM with its own operating system.

If I describe Parallels Desktop in detail, I've already done it Nikita Goryainov in, I recommend reading it for those interested.

The installation process is simple, everything is done for people. Launch the installation wizard, specify the path to the Windows image or to the optical drive with the installation disk, select the amount of disk space that you are ready to allocate for the second platform, and install the OS as if you were doing this not in a virtual machine environment, but on a regular PC . In the case of Windows 7 or Windows 8, the installation process consists of a few clicks. If you want the old Windows XP, you will have to use Parallels Desktop 7 (8 does not support the old OS from Microsoft) and suffer a little with the installation, answering all sorts of questions during the process.

Minuses the use of third-party virtualization products is obvious. They are paid, but this is not the biggest problem. The main one is the not very high performance of the virtual machine in games. In many respects, of course, it depends on the power of the Mac, but even when working with powerful models, the performance losses will be significant.

Plus In addition to, in fact, the ability to play Windows games in the OS X environment, this means working simultaneously in two operating systems. Here you are playing World of Tanks, suddenly you need to check your email - one click and you are taken to your native OS X desktop with all your personal applications.

Actually, in this mode, I conducted a short game test on a MacBook Pro 15" based on Core i5 and with 4 GB of RAM (one of the first models based on Core, that is, not the fastest).

What can we say - it’s quite playable on medium-minimum settings. Depending on the card, the number of output frames per second ranged from 15 to 30. If the machine were more modern, then we could stop at this option. But if you want to get the most out of your computer, then it is better to use the second method.

The Mac hardware is not very different from that of a PC, if you do not take into account the design of the case, therefore there should be no problems with direct installation of Windows. There aren’t any, since Apple itself has built tools for this into the OS, calling them Boot Camp. Finding it is not difficult - start typing the word “ Assistant" in Spotlight and the system will suggest " Boot Camp Assistant»:

Launch it and follow the prompts and instructions. The only thing is that you will need a clean flash drive onto which the latest set of Boot Camp drivers will be downloaded from the Internet to install them in Windows.

If you have an optical drive in your Mac, the process of installing Windows within Boot Camp is simple, straightforward and looks like you are installing the system on a bare PC.

If there is none, then you will have to use either an external one or create an installation disk on a flash drive, which is more difficult, but quite doable, and in the case of Windows 8, there is a ready-made solution from Microsoft itself.

I would also like to give a couple of tips on the amount of allocated disk space. If you install Windows XP, then 20 GB will be enough (the system will take about 5 GB, plus space for software and games). For Windows 7 and newer, it is better to allocate at least 50 GB. Boot Camp will pinch off this piece from the system disk and will be only partially accessible in OS X.

In Boot Camp mode, a computer running Windows operates at full capacity, and on the test Mac the game ran much better and faster than when using a virtual machine.

For games, this is basically the best option. The only downside is that to switch between operating systems you will have to restart the computer. But if you wish, in Parallels Desktop and other virtualization systems you can use the Boot Camp partition and then the experience will be exactly the same as described above, but with reduced performance, which is critical for games.

It is worth understanding that WoT is not a simulator with complex controls and requires an understanding of the basic principles of operation of the machine and its instruments. If it were so, the game would never have gained an audience of more than 70 million active users. Simplicity is what attracts people.

In fact, all you need to do is download the free client from the official website, install, launch, register and start playing. No training required. Steer your tank using a few buttons and a mouse, shoot at enemies and enjoy the process.

But gradually the player will notice that the tank has a crew, and the vehicle itself can be upgraded using funds and experience gained in battle. Or rather, experience is used to study new types of weapons, armor, combat vehicles, etc. In total, more than 300 models of armored vehicles are offered, in each of which you can upgrade a number of components separately, including the engine, chassis and gun - a real expanse.

But the development of personal armored vehicles is not the only option for improving its combat qualities. The tankers themselves members of the crew of a particular vehicle can also be trained. As soon as a crew member has mastered the main specialty, he can receive new skills (perks). There are basic ones, such as repair (speeds up the repair of damaged modules), camouflage, or fire extinguishing, as well as specific ones - increasing the efficiency of a ram, reducing the dispersion of a gun on the move, reducing the resistance of weak and medium soils when the tank is moving, and a number of others. Well-developed team skills allow you to gain a serious advantage in battle.

As for armored vehicles, they are divided into several classes: light, medium and heavy tanks, self-propelled guns (self-propelled artillery) and PT-self-propelled guns (specialized anti-tank version of self-propelled guns). Each type of technology is tailored for specific actions and situations. That is, it cannot be said that a light tank will be worse than a heavy one, and a tank destroyer will be more advantageous than a medium tank. So, the self-propelled gun hides on the edge of the map and shoots through the entire battlefield. With one shot, such a vehicle is capable of destroying a heavy tank, but its own armor leaves much to be desired. It is helpless against any tank that gets close. By the way, during combat operations with the help of self-propelled guns, we see the battlefield from above:

The light tank is an excellent scout. Nimble and small, it easily rushes past the clumsy heavies, highlighting them on the map for self-propelled guns and tank destroyers, who from afar will make a cutlet out of the enemy.

In turn, medium and heavy tanks are the team’s iron fist, capable of pushing through enemy defenses and rolling the enemy out in a thin layer across the battlefield.

There is only one goal - to destroy the enemy team, consisting of 15 combat units. You can also capture a base or a certain territory on the map. But in general, this is a kind of Counter Strike about tanks. Actually, this approach attracted people. You upgrade your car, crew and fight, buy a new tank, get new sensations in battle, your capabilities grow, you want to quickly upgrade the new product to find out what it can do in the top version... and so on by analogy. Addictive, very addictive!

« And this is where the developer begins to turn around in full and earn money, playing on human weaknesses!“- exclaims the reader who has learned from the experience of freemium games.

In part, you will be right. In World of Tanks, you actually have the opportunity to use real money to buy special virtual currency, gold (or “golda”, as players call it) and receive some bonuses (sign up for a premium account, which allows you to gain experience faster and earn money, purchase special armored vehicles and etc.), but this will not turn a rich player into a superman on the battlefield. What can I say other than “Bravo!” Enthusiasts from Wargaming put their souls into their project, a huge amount of experience, intellectual and financial resources - the result is obvious. The game has enslaved the world, and at the same time it does not put pressure on the wallets of players, which I can judge from the experience of my own son, who did not invest a penny in six months, but very seriously upgraded his fleet of equipment and learned to masterfully destroy opponents, even if the forces are not equal and the enemy flaunts a more pumped-up, special car, bought for real money.

Moreover, the project continues to actively develop. What's it worth? major improvement in game graphics, after an update late last year, as well as significant improvements to the physical model. The game looks very beautiful, and the tank models are, in principle, amazing in their detail and authenticity. Each piece of equipment was created with the support of historians and tank building experts.

Yes, tanks that actually took part in battles and prototypes produced in the past in single copies may overlap on the battlefield. Yes, German, Russian and British equipment can be on the same team. But no one claims the authenticity of historical battles, which, by the way, take place on 36 large maps. Otherwise, what kind of drive can we talk about? But in terms of technical characteristics, this is one of the most realistic games of this kind. In addition, the latest update made the game world more real: tanks began to sink in water, fall off cliffs, explosions became more realistic, sound effects became more natural, and if a self-propelled gun gasped nearby, it gasped like an adult.

A new update 8.8 will be released very soon. Four new Soviet medium tanks will appear on the battlefields of World of Tanks. A-43, A-44 and “Object 416” will be located at levels from 6 to 8, and the second branch of ST will be headed by the experimental model “Object 140”.

In addition to Soviet equipment, two new “Germans” will burst into battle: the Tier 4 heavy tank DW and the Tier 6 medium tank VK3002 (M). VK3001H will drop from 6th to 5th level and move into the heavy equipment category, like VK3601H.
The fleet of premium vehicles will be replenished with two “Chinese” vehicles: the Tier 8 medium tank T-34-3 and the Tier 8 heavy tank 112.
