Meizu MX6 review: experiments continue. Review of the Meizu MX6 smartphone: almost the main Meizu MX 6

For me, Meizu's development strategy still remains a mystery: regular and chaotic release of new models of different levels, in different lines. And if until recently it was possible to conditionally divide models into the flagship Pro line, “sub-flagship” MX and the affordable M line in different diagonals, then after the M3E presented recently, bewilderment arises again. The smartphone looks like a slightly modified M3 Note. Well, oh well: the company is still “in search”, we stock up on popcorn, observe and get acquainted with the existing models as far as possible. Today - with the fresh Meizu MX6, which was introduced less than a month ago.

What is this?

Meizu MX6 is an Android smartphone with a metal body, a 5.5-inch 1920x1080 screen, an almost top-end ten-core MediaTek processor, 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal memory (not expandable).

Why is he interesting?

For the first time, Meizu decided to make a completely (almost) metal smartphone a year ago, it was just the predecessor of the MX5. Since then, this practice has been used continuously and the design has evolved. The current MX6 resembles a larger version of the Pro 6 with slightly more modest characteristics and a new approach to the main camera: the number of pixels is smaller and their size is larger. Yes, the company also decided to try new screens: instead of AMOLED the company agreed on supplies with the Japanese Sharp, which provided Meizu with 5.5-inch Full HD screens made using TDDI technology with a touch layer applied to the glass. The screen module has a very small thickness and (theoretically) high brightness and contrast.

What does it look like?

We received a test sample without a box or kit for review. Let's venture to assume that there will be a charger, a cable and a paper clip and let's move on to the appearance. Visually, the smartphone really looks like an enlarged Meizu Pro 6. The same shapes and outlines, the same metal body and arrangement of all functional elements. It is difficult to judge whether this is good or bad: on the one hand, there is a lack of innovation, on the other, why not use a successful and convenient form again? The front has a 5.5-inch screen, the frames on the sides are thin, and thanks to the glass rounded at the edges, they look even thinner. By the way, the manufacturer does not specify what kind of glass:

Above the screen is a speaker, with a camera and sensors symmetrically located on either side of it. A little to the right is the usual LED indicator:

Under the display there is the same oval mechanical button mTouch 2.1, it is also a scanner, it is also a navigation button (touching performs the “back” function, pressing - “home”, long press - lock/unlock the smartphone):

The buttons are implemented in the same way as in Pro 5/Pro 6: in a small recess on the right side of the case. Twin volume rocker and power button just below:

On the left side there is a tray for two SIM cards:

Meizu has made a strange move: the only version with 32 GB of internal memory and no MicroSD card slot, only two nano SIM cards:

There is nothing on the top edge except an additional microphone:

Meizu seems to have listened to the wishes of users and, starting with Pro 6, flagships have received a 3.5 mm headphone jack on the bottom. It also houses a conversational microphone, an external speaker and a USB Type-C connector:

As usual, the model is available in silver, gray and gold. This time we came across a glamorous golden one. If you don’t look closely, the smartphone in the photo can be confused with the Pro 6. The only thing that gives away is a different flash design and the lack of laser autofocus:

As with all models, the Meizu logo is placed in the middle of the back panel, and above is the camera lens, which protrudes quite a bit beyond the body. During use it is completely unnoticeable. Below is the dual LED flash:

The plastic inserts for the antennas are made in the same way as in the Pro 6, they are flush with the rest of the case and fit perfectly, so that it is almost impossible to feel their presence, and the top and bottom ends are made of the same metal as the rest of the case:

Comparison with Pro 5. The difference in width is minimal, in height it is more significant:

The designs of the back covers differ significantly. The MX6 has a much smaller camera module protruding and the plastic inserts are made in stripes. In Pro 5, although they tried to make the plastic top and bottom the same color as the metal back, it didn’t work out in the best way:

In general, there are no revelations in terms of design, we have already seen it all, but the MX6 looks very solid, is well assembled and (which is very important) fits perfectly in the hand.

How is his screen?

As we wrote above, the Meizu MX6 has a 5.5-inch FullHD screen with a pixel density of 403 ppi (as indicated by the manufacturer, although simple calculations give a result of about 401 ppi, but oh well). The company supplies the screens Sharp, they are made using TDDI technology with a touch layer applied to the glass. They promise that the maximum brightness can reach 500 cd/m², and the contrast is 1500:1. The screens of Meizu engineering samples (and not only) quite often differ from the final ones, so different options are possible. Everything is fine with viewing angles:

There is a very good quality oleophobic coating, but the maximum brightness seems to not quite correspond to the declared one. But things are going very well and the screen is absolutely readable even in the direct rays of the bright summer sun:

The picture itself is pleasant, the colors look quite natural and rich. Multi-touch up to 10 touches supported:

The colorimeter showed that the maximum brightness is significantly lower than stated: 355.976 cd/m2, which is quite good and sufficient for normal use, but there are many models on the market with a brighter screen, like Meizu. Again, I remind you: the final version may differ significantly from the engineering sample. The brightness of the black field was 0.48 cd/m2 , and the contrast is 742:1. To adjust color rendering, there is a familiar utility, to which an eye protection mode has been added (also known as a blue light filter) with adjustment:

The situation with screen calibration is familiar. An excess of blue and a lack of red, although not critical:

Comparison with other models:

Device nameWhite field brightness,
cd/m2
The brightness of the black field,

Contrast
Meizu MX6 355.976 0.48 742:1
Meizu MX5 373.623 0

Huawei Mate7 394.85 0.4 987:1

What about hardware and performance?

The insides of the smartphone are a little simpler than the current flagship Meizu Pro 6: the same 4 GB of RAM, but instead of the overclocked MediaTek Helio X25, the slightly more modest Helio X20 is installed. All the same 10 cores and a Mali T-880 video accelerator, the maximum clock frequency is 2.3 GHz. This is quite enough for any average user who does not need records in AnTuTu or any other synthetic test. There is enough power for both the shell with programs and games. In the heaviest cases the case heats up, but it cannot be said that it is above reasonable limits:

All the same standard Flyme performance modes: Energy Saving, Balanced and Productive:

Regarding internal memory, the situation is clear: only one option with 32 GB of eMMC 5.1 type. There is no slot for memory cards and there are no plans for versions with a larger capacity. So before buying, you should think about whether that much will be enough. Of course, this is not a sad 16 GB, but for those who like to listen to music, play games and watch movies on the road, there will clearly not be enough space.

The smartphone supports GPS and GLONASS; a cold start takes about 15 seconds:

The external speaker of the smartphone is slightly above average in volume and average in sound quality, although at maximum volume the quality sags significantly. The smartphone is not positioned as a music device and in terms of sound quality in headphones it is inferior to flagships, including its Meizu Pro 5 and Pro 6. The sound is not bad, nothing more. The proprietary player and equalizer have not changed for a long time. Everything is exactly the same as in previous models:

The smartphone does not have the most capacious 3060 mAh battery, so you shouldn’t expect records for battery life. In normal use, without a lot of games and a player, the smartphone lasts for a day. At maximum load, the smartphone can withstand about 4 hours, video can play for about 7 hours. One of the advantages is support for fast charging, which really works.

For those who want to know more

The smartphone is equipped with a 64-bit MediaTek Helio X20 processor (aka MT6797) with ten cores in three clusters: 2x ARM Cortex-A72 at 2.3 GHz, 4xARM Cortex-A53 at 1.9 GHz and 4xARM Cortex-A53 1.4 GHz, ARM Mali-T880 graphics accelerator. The amount of RAM is 4 GB LPDDR3. Of course, the results in synthetic tests are not flagship, but very worthy. Looks like there are some optimization issues. If in games the case heats up moderately, then in 3DMark and GFXbench the smartphone gets hellishly hot:

How user-friendly is the interface?

Meizu is finishing up its Flyme shell, it is gradually gaining some new features, a base in the form of current versions of Android, but there were drastic changes only during the transition from the 4th to the 5th version, then the differences are minimal, so I don’t see the point examine it under a microscope. Only in general terms, for those who have not previously used Meizu smartphones. The smartphone runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS with Flyme 5.2.2.0G shell (global version):

Recently it became known that Meizu plans to abandon pre-installed Google services. To be installed using Google Services Installer from Hot Apps:

As always, no AppDrawer, only desktops, shortcuts and widgets. The top curtain contains all the main switches and a brightness control. It can be called by swiping down anywhere on the screen:

The settings menu is easy to understand, everything is logical and understandable, as is the settings for two SIM cards:

One interesting thing is the ability to customize the bottom navigation bar:

Setting up work with fingerprints is implemented as standard. In addition to blocking the device itself, you can block content or applications. Up to 5 prints are stored. The scanner works quickly and accurately:

The application manager is called up by swiping from the bottom edge of the display. You can close all applications, only selected ones, or start multi-window mode. It does not work with all applications:

And pre-installed utilities:

How are things going with the camera?

Meizu is in no hurry to change the camera interface. He has been wandering from one model to another for a long time. The main screen contains buttons for shutter release, video, viewing the previous photo/video, flash settings buttons, timer, changing cameras and selecting modes. In the settings menu you can select photo and video resolution, enable HDR, grid, electronic level and self-timer. There is a completely manual mode:

But with the main camera itself, everything is much more interesting: Meizu has finally recognized that it is not the number of pixels that is important, but their quality. In other words, the company took a closer look at the best cameras on the market Samsung Galaxy S7 edge and iPhone 6S Plus (they were mentioned at the presentation) and decided to move in the same direction and use not 21-megapixel matrices, but 12-megapixel ones with a larger pixel size. Of course, the choice fell on the module Sony, or rather the new IMX386 model with a resolution of 12 megapixels and a pixel size of 1.25 microns. Moreover, Meizu claims that it is receiving a customized version of the module specifically for the MX6. This is complemented by 6-element optics with f/2.0 aperture and phase detection autofocus. At the presentation it was claimed that Meizu MX6 takes a photo in 319 ms, while S7 edge takes 323 ms to do this. Judging by the test sample would not be entirely correct, but we can already say with confidence that Meizu has finally gone in the right direction. The camera is really fast and takes detailed and rich pictures even in low light, which was extremely difficult for previous models. For now, the HDR mode works a little strangely, but I think they will finish it.

Standard Mode:

For some reason, YouTube refused to accept 4K videos from Meizu MX6 (not the first time with Meizu devices), but at least Slow Motion managed to upload:

Bottom line

Meizu MX6 turned out to be a kind of reworked version of Meizu Pro 6: in some places better, in others a little worse, but cheaper. It has a convenient and attractive metal case with excellent build quality, really productive hardware (given the price category), a good screen, and it is possible that it will be better in the commercial version. And, most interestingly, Meizu finally managed to really improve the quality of the camera and very significantly, it is very good. There are only two negative points: the lack of a MicroSD slot and only one 32 GB option. A strange decision that will scare away some potential buyers. The second point is that I would like a larger battery: even the much more affordable M3 Note model received 4100 mAh.

5 reasons to buy Meizu MX6:

  • Excellent metal body and assembly;
  • high performance (in its price category);
  • finally a quality camera;
  • fast and accurate fingerprint scanner;
  • smart screen.

2 reasons not to buy Meizu MX6:

  • lack of microSD slot;
  • The battery could have been bigger.

Flagship and almost flagship, how are they similar and how are they different, is it worth spending more money or is it better to save? Let's find out by studying the characteristics of both smartphones.

Price

Let's start with the main thing, the price, Meizu Pro 6 costs 32,990 rubles for the version with 32 GB of memory, Meizu MX6 with the same volume will cost 5 thousand rubles cheaper, it costs 27,990.

Screen

Meizu Pro 6 has a diagonal of 5.2 inches, and Meizu MX6 has 5.5 inches, while they have the same resolution of 1080x1920 pixels, so the pixel density of Pro 6 is slightly higher: 423 PPI versus 403 PPI. In practice, it is very difficult to feel the difference between them, if you only examine the screens under a microscope and look for individual pixels, but why do this?

The phones have different types of matrices, the MX6 has TFT-IPS, and the Pro 6 has AMOLED. Which screen is better? This is a question from the series, what to drink: Coke or Pepsi, it seems almost the same thing, but the tastes are different, so here it is. Initially, AMOLED produces a more juicy and color-saturated picture, but the screen settings provide several customizable profiles; you can choose a picture in neutral tones, not so colorful.

Both phones offer a special mode: when you turn it on, the image on the screen goes into warm colors. Thus, we strain our eyes less when reading from the screen in the dark. If you are not satisfied with the default settings, change the color balance manually.

A distinctive feature of Meizu Pro 6 is support for 3D Touch. It’s an interesting thing, however, developers are in no hurry to update their applications for this function. An interesting toy, but in practice its absence does not greatly affect the usability of the MX6.

Dimensions

Meizu Pro 6 is a very compact flagship. By 2016, we were already accustomed to the fact that a screen of about 5 inches had become the norm. Meizu Pro 6 with a 5.2-inch display turned out to be small; the body dimensions are 147.7 x 70.8 x 7.3 mm. The Meizu MX6 is slightly larger at 153.6 x 75.2 x 7.3 mm and has a slightly larger screen.

The weight difference between the two is barely noticeable on paper, with the Pro 6 weighing 160 grams and the MX6 155 grams. How is that? A larger phone weighs less, this is not a mistake, but an idea of the designers. When you hold both phones in your hands, the Pro 6 feels heftier and heavier, while the MX6, on the contrary, feels light for a phone with a large display.

Frame

Both phones are very similar in design, in fact, the only difference is in size. Meizu MX6 and Pro 6 with aluminum cases, a choice of 4 colors: silver, gold, dark gray and pink. I would like to highlight the unusual flash design of the Meizu Pro 6; there is no other phone like this on the market, this is its calling card.

Software

Both phones run Android 6.0 paired with the proprietary Flyme OS 5.2 shell, here they are equal.

Camera

The front cameras are 5 megapixels in both smartphones, but the main cameras are different. Meizu Pro 6 received a 21-megapixel Sony IMX230 sensor with a 6-element lens, laser focusing and F/2.2 aperture. Meizu MX6 with a 12-megapixel Sony IMX386 module, 6-element lens, phase focusing and F/2.0 aperture.

As for the shooting quality, the Pro 6 has a little higher detail, but this is expected, the rule “the more megapixels, the better” applies here, but in low light the MX6 comes out ahead, the more light-sensitive sensor has an effect, and it also has faster focusing. But the Pro 6 has a slightly wider shooting angle, making it more convenient to photograph buildings.

The pictures on the left were taken on Meizu Pro 6, the pictures on the right were taken on Meizu MX6.

The calling card of Meizu Pro 6 is a ring flash with 10 LEDs, while the MX6 has a simpler flash, two LEDs. But both of them are two-tone, helping to more accurately convey skin colors. When shooting video, both smartphones have electronic stabilization, and both phones shoot video in 4K.

Performance

The heart of the Meizu Pro 6 is the MediaTek Helio X25 processor, while the Meizu MX6 has the MediaTek Helio X20. According to tests in AnTuTu, they are almost the same from each other, but Pro 6 knocks out a little more parrots.

The amount of RAM in both cases is 4 GB, but the internal memory in the Pro 6 can be 32 or 64 GB, while the MX6 has only one version of 32 GB. There is no memory card slot in both cases.

Battery

Meizu Pro 6 has a 2560 mAh battery, and Meizu MX6 has a 3060 mAh battery, both support mCharge 3.0 fast charging. Despite the Pro 6's cost-effective AMOLED screen and more expensive IPS display, the MX6 still lasts a little longer. In both cases, we charge our phones every day, but the MX6, with a similar load, lasts not 3.5, but 4.5 hours in games. If you watch the video, it comes out to 9 and 10.5 hours, respectively.

Sound

The multimedia speaker in both phones is sonorous and loud, but the Pro 6 has more headroom and can be heard very well in different conditions.

The earpiece speakers of the MX6 and Pro 6 are of high quality, there is parity.

To my surprise, the headphone volume headroom of the MX6 is greater than that of the Pro 6 with a separate amplifier. At first I thought that it was my hearing problems, but after a series of checks I remained unconvinced, the MX6 has a 40 percent greater reserve. At the same time, the quality of the music is comparable, but the Pro 6 has to be cranked up to maximum volume, while with the MX6 you don’t have to strain yourself trying to hear familiar notes.

Which Meizu to choose?

As a user of Meizu Pro 6, I was surprised that the MX6 was able to outperform the flagship in a number of parameters, a very unusual phenomenon; usually “middle graders” are artificially pacified so as not to spoil the lives of older models. Here are the arguments in favor of Meizu MX6:

By price: Meizu MX6 is more interesting because it costs less

By screen quality: It’s difficult to compare IPS and AMOLED, these are different technologies, each with their own pros and cons, but I would choose MX6, the reason is banal - a larger display for less money. I also love TFT screens; the colors look more natural, despite all the AMOLED settings.

By design and convenience: here they are the same, the MX6 has a slightly larger size compared to the Pro 6, a matter of personal preference, I vote for larger screens, so I point to the MX6

By camera: here I am for MX6, so far this is the best phone in terms of shooting quality among Meizu

By productivity: here Pro 6 is more powerful in tests, but in practical use there is not much difference. But the Pro 6 comes with 64 GB of memory, and the MX6 in this version is only expected in the future. I think it's fair to give the win to the Pro 6.

By working hours: MX6 lives a little longer, although the difference is not particularly critical

By sound: Meizu MX6 is definitely more interesting

As a result, it turns out that the “almost” flagship Meizu MX6 is preferable for purchase in terms of price and quality ratio. More features for less money, that's good.

The MX series allowed Meizu to enter the global market and establish itself as a manufacturer of truly high-quality and sophisticated smartphones. While reviewing the meizu mx6 32gb, we were pleasantly surprised by the capabilities of the new flagship. Now the company's best models are marked with the PRO index, and the M-series belongs to the budget and mid-range segment. Smartphones in this series have not always been cheap and high-performance, but they have always been good competition, thanks to the presence of a proprietary “zest”. It could be an advanced screen, better sound than competitors and other differences. The new MX6 turned out to be quite strange - in general it is of high quality, but not quite balanced in detail when compared with previous models.

Design and control of Meizu MX6

When creating each model, the manufacturer uses a single design style, which will soon become classic for Meizu devices. Compared to its predecessor, the MX6 case looks much better. It's not even about the presence of stylish curved strips for antennas, but about several other factors. While preparing the meizu mx6 review in Russian, we noticed that it has become much thinner, so it is now lighter and fits better in the hand. The plastic inserts that were previously located on both sides of the back cover have disappeared. The antenna strips are now flush with the body, whereas previously they were recessed and disguised as chrome, but quickly accumulated dust, which irritated users.

The body is made of high-quality metal and does not slip in the hand. The fingerprint scanner is installed in the central key under the display. Operation occurs clearly. The slot on the left side is designed to accommodate two nano SIM cards. There is no slot for a memory card. The smartphone contains all the features that made the manufacturer’s equipment fall in love. The power and volume keys are located on the right.

At the bottom you can find USB Type-C, a microphone, as well as multimedia speaker grilles and a 3.5 mm headset jack. There is only a speaker on the top panel. The sensors and eye of the selfie camera are installed symmetrically with respect to the speaker grille.

Display and sound Meizu MX6

Smartphone meizu mx6 characteristics correspond to the flagship level. It is equipped with a high-quality IPS display with a diagonal of 5.5 inches. Thanks to the high pixel density per inch and FullHD resolution, the picture is perfectly clear. The screen is of high quality, but you shouldn’t expect anything extraordinary from it. It is protected by 2.5D glass, which makes it look more beautiful. The brightness reserve is small, but the glass does not reflect in the sun and does not collect dirt, making it convenient to read information under any conditions. Colors are oversaturated, DeltaE deviation is high, like for a flagship phone. But the values have not deviated too much from the norm; we are not talking about threatening values.

The color scheme is “cold”, but now it is difficult to find a device in which the white tint is not slightly tinted blue. If necessary, you can always adjust the color scheme in the settings.

Meizu mx6 price remains at 24,000 rubles, so it will have quite a few competitors. The operation of the screen is controlled by an interesting mechanism for adjusting the image depending on current conditions. It cannot be disabled. The gadget changes the image settings if it thinks that this way it will look more impressive and realistic. As a result, information sometimes appears more vivid than it really is.

A very strange situation has arisen with sound - the device now does not have a separate audio chip designed for Hi-Fi sound, despite the fact that it was in the previous model and provided really cool sound. Instead of a chip, the Helio X2 audio path is used, from which the manufacturer has squeezed out the maximum capabilities. In terms of sound, the speaker turned out to be quite standard. It plays clearly until the maximum volume is set. For this reason, we won’t particularly praise the speaker of the new model, although it turned out to be quite good.

While reviewing the meizu mx6, we tested the sound in the headphones and surprisingly it sounds very good. Other MediaTek gadgets sound average or very bad, but here the situation is completely different. The sound is more likely to correspond to the level of top-end Snapdragons. The sound is clear, the volume reserve will surprise any music lover. With standard settings, high frequencies predominate, but using the equalizer you can average them.

Technical characteristics of Meizu MX6

The device is powered by a 10-core Helio X20 MT6797 processor, but this is rather a minus, since this series of processors is considered the most underdeveloped in flagship smartphones. They do not always work well, at some points there is a decrease in performance, and the battery is used very uneconomically. When the processor heats up, throttling is activated, preventing it from breaking. Meizu mx6 pro characteristics are very good, the only let down is the processor, which can lose up to 40% of power when heating up in games. It’s quite comfortable to play, but sometimes there may be minor stutters.

The flagship MediaTek processor still overheats, but now loses no more than 20% of its power, which has a positive effect on performance. In MX6 this processor performs a little better. When tested in Antutu under ideal conditions, the device scored 90,000 parrots. But 4 GB of RAM is sufficient with a large margin. You can open multiple applications and use them at the same time without them closing spontaneously.

Meizu MX6 interface

We have already discussed the characteristics of the meizu mx6, now it’s time to move on to the interface of the unusual device. It is a combination of proprietary iOS and Android elements. Instead of three control keys, there is only one. It's uncomfortable at first, but you quickly get used to it. Out of the box, the smartphone runs on Android 6.0 with Flyme 5.2 installed on top. Everything works quickly and without brakes. There is nothing superfluous in the system, and the menu of recommended applications will be very convenient to use.

Meizu MX6 cameras

Over the past years, the manufacturer has equipped its gadgets with fairly good cameras, but third-party companies were responsible for their development. This year, improvements became noticeable when, through the efforts of the manufacturer, Sony's 21 megapixel camera was improved. While reviewing the camera on the meizu mx6, we found out that it has an improved sensor from Sony - IMX286, which was previously used in the Huawei P9. If you are familiar with this device, you know that it takes pictures very well.

The MX6 has a camera resolution of only 12 megapixels, but it is larger in size. Thanks to this, the camera copes well with night photography. The new model perhaps shoots better than the manufacturer’s previous developments, but is inferior to such flagships as the Samsung Galaxy S6/S7 and Nexus 5X. It's all because of the manufacturer's lack of desire to carefully optimize the camera model for the phone's hardware. Focusing is instantaneous and difficult scenes are captured very well. There's excellent levels of sharpness across the entire frame, and dynamic range is quite wide. When choosing exposure, the camera often makes mistakes. Macro photography is also very difficult, which means you have to press the focus button several times until it properly focuses on the subject.

Example photo:

The camera control interface is not very convenient even when shooting manually, but over time you get used to it. The smartphone takes better quality pictures than the Samsung Galaxy S5 or any Asus, but is slightly inferior to the ZTE Axon 7.

The meizu mx6 aliexpress selfie camera often makes mistakes with color balance, but pleasantly surprises with detail. Even when shooting indoors with insufficient lighting, the quality is at the highest level. There is no noise or blur.

The display and poorly optimized processor consume a lot of energy, so you can’t count on high autonomy. The smartphone will only last for a day of use, but you can’t count on more. Oddly enough, the processor did not worsen battery life in games. This is most likely due to the fact that when it heats up, it reduces power, which means it consumes less energy. The IPS display consumes more power than AMOLED, which is why the device holds a charge worse than its predecessor. The only thing that saves the situation is the battery capacity of 3060 mAh, otherwise it would not be enough for a day. In sleep mode, only 3-4% is consumed per night.

Bottom line

The meizu mx6 silver smartphone has lost a dedicated audio chip, as well as a cost-effective screen, but instead the camera has been improved. The battery remained unchanged. The processor leaves much to be desired; it is one of the most problematic versions in modern flagships. Instead, it would be better to install a high-performance Snapdragon 652. The design has changed slightly, and a memory card slot has not appeared in the manufacturer’s flagships, although 32 GB of internal memory will be enough for most users.
