The article talks about how to check a flash drive for viruses, the dangers of infection of removable storage devices, and how to cure an infection.

Digital Age

Every year the accessibility of digital technologies is growing, and for a long time now you won’t surprise anyone with a powerful computer, tablet or smartphone with Internet access. Such technologies have firmly entered our world, and many can no longer imagine life without them. And it’s not just about entertainment, they significantly simplify any work, communication between people and other processes. But over time, a whole subset of attackers has appeared who use digital technologies for various crimes, theft and personal gain; they are called hackers, and their weapons are computer viruses.

This began long before the widespread use of computers and the Internet. The very first viruses were a kind of jokes and practical jokes, they did not pursue evil intentions, but over time everything changed. Especially when various financial organizations began to use computers, and people began to use credit cards and other electronic currencies.

Antiviruses have been developed to protect against them, but malware can bypass them, and very often unsuspecting people participate in their distribution, for example, using an already infected flash drive. So how to check a flash drive for viruses and clean it of them? We'll figure this out.

Distribution methods

First, let's talk a little about what flash drives are for and why they are dangerous.

Any virus, whether biological or computer, needs to spread itself somehow. In the case of digital technologies, the Internet and vulnerabilities in operating systems and antiviruses are required. And at some point, hackers came up with an interesting and original solution in their own way: viruses began to copy themselves onto circuit media.

In practice, it looks something like this: when a computer is infected, the virus does not reveal itself for some time, and when a removable device is connected to the computer, be it a flash drive, floppy disk or hard drive, the virus is copied onto it and the moment it is connected to another computer it infects already his. Such malware may not reveal itself for a very long time and can be activated at the command of its creator on hundreds of PCs at once. And if this happened, then how to check the flash drive for viruses?

Examination

First you need to decide on an antivirus program. They all perform the same task, but some differ in functionality; for example, they do not have an intelligent module that recognizes a threat that is not yet in the official databases. So, if you need a guarantee, it is better to use several at once; they are free and can be found on the official websites of full versions of the software.

In the case of a regular antivirus, you need to open “My Computer,” right-click on the flash drive icon and select anti-virus scanning.

If temporary utilities are used, then before launching them you must specify the scan zones, in particular, the flash drive. So now we know how to check a flash drive for viruses.

The duration of this process greatly depends on the power of the computer, specific security software, the “cloggedness” of the flash drive, and a number of others. By the way, most modern antiviruses can scan all removable media automatically immediately after they are connected, or this parameter can be configured manually. So now we know how to clean a flash drive from viruses.

Errors

By the way, flash drives, like all storage media, are sometimes susceptible to file system errors. This happens mainly due to interruption in reading or writing information, power failure, etc. In any case, if the flash drive does not immediately fail, but the system reports errors, you can try to fix them. So, in Windows OS, the system itself will offer to run a scan if there are errors. But this can also be done manually. You need to select the flash drive in “My Computer”, right-click, then “Properties”, “Tools” and “Check disk for errors”.

But sometimes it happens that it is not possible to do this using standard OS tools, then a specialized program comes to the rescue. You can check the flash drive with third-party software, for example, Flash Memory Toolkit. This is free software, which can be found on the official website. If errors can be corrected, the program will do everything automatically and you can use the storage device again.

Conclusion

So we dismantled it from viruses and checked it for file system errors. It is advisable to carry out these actions regularly, as they will protect your computer from becoming infected and losing important data. But perfect protection does not exist, and viruses are constantly modified by their authors.

It often happens that when we regularly use a flash drive or other portable storage device, we put our computer at risk.
This is especially dangerous when connecting someone else's USB device, the contents of which we can only guess at. Thus, the likelihood of infecting your PC with viruses is very high.

USB Disk Security (Russian version) is an excellent software solution that can automatically check flash drive for viruses immediately after connecting it to the computer. The amount of RAM required is so small that the utility can be used on low-power PCs and laptops.

The program is fully compatible with most antiviruses, such as DrWeb, Kaspersky, Nod32, so no software failures or system conflicts will arise, and installation will take a matter of seconds, because the size of this software is small.

The main task of the USB Disk Security utility is maximum online protection against most types of viruses and computer threats that are distributed through USB drives, memory cards, portable hard drives and other external USB devices.

Now, you can check your computer for viruses online (when you connect a flash drive) without user intervention - everything happens automatically.

Attention: USB Disk Security is not a full-fledged antivirus, but merely complements its functions in relation to external drives and is activated the moment they are connected to the computer. In other words, to achieve reliable protection against hacking and infection of the system, you need to have a fully functioning antivirus with up-to-date databases and support for the firewall function. Only in this case can you be sure of the relative protection of your computer from viruses and other potentially unwanted software.

The highlight in Russian is its ability to check your computer for viruses online for free - the developers have created a special module that allows you to check suspicious sites for the presence of malware. In addition, the program allows you to adjust the list of startup applications and clean up garbage from memory. All this adds advantages to this wonderful and free utility. You can download the program for free from the official website, or you can use the link below (we have already done this for you).

All malicious files that intend to enter the user's computer will be isolated and disinfected from the virus.

Checking the flash drive for viruses is mandatory, but if doing it manually is inconvenient, we recommend installing USB Disk Security!

The most common cause of PC infection occurs due to an outdated anti-virus database that does not have information about new threats. USB DISK SECURITY has its own unique algorithm for identifying malicious code sections, which allows you to quickly respond to security threats.

Digital technologies have firmly entered the lives of each of us; we can no longer imagine life without a computer, tablet, smartphone, and even more so without the Internet. And this applies not so much to the sphere of recreation and entertainment, but to business and progress.

Digital technologies simplify, automate and speed up any work, information transfer, data exchange and so on. Gone are the days when we used paper media, punched cards, magnetic tapes, floppy disks, and CDs to transfer data.

Currently, flash drives are still being used, which have a number of advantages over other physical storage media. Although, to be honest, the age of flash drives will also be short-lived, as the world is gradually moving into virtual reality, in which no media is needed anymore.

The main thing is to have access to the Internet, use virtual storage, or, as they are also called, cloud disks. After all, they are designed for secure storage and transmission of any information.

But while flash drives have not yet disappeared from our lives, many people are concerned with the question: “how to check a flash drive for viruses.” Since this is the most serious drawback of physical storage media.

With the development of digital technologies, the technology of spreading viruses is developing by leaps and bounds, sometimes even ahead of schedule. This is confirmed by regularly carried out cyber attacks on computers around the world.

A storage medium such as a flash drive can easily pick up a virus, as a result of which you can lose valuable data. Moreover, a flash drive can become a source of infection for your computer and other mobile devices.

To prevent this, you should check your flash drive for viruses before using it. Clean and remove malicious software, preventing it from infecting your devices.

Virus check, instructions

In describing how to check a flash drive for viruses, I assume that you have a good antivirus installed on your computer that protects your device from infection. When you take someone else’s, unfamiliar flash drive, or your own, but it has been in the wrong hands, on someone else’s computer, then you must check it before starting it.

Insert the USB into the computer socket, while holding down the Shift key for a few seconds. This should be done so that autorun does not work and the flash drive does not open, otherwise the malicious program can quickly migrate to your device. Then, even after cleaning the flash drive, you will not get rid of the virus.

In short, we inserted a flash drive without starting it, click on the my computer icon and click on the flash drive to select it. The right button will allow you to select the one you need, depending on the installed antivirus - scan, check, and so on.

The bottom line is to check the flash drive for viruses using an antivirus program installed on the computer.

Checking with additional programs

A situation may arise in which your antivirus program does not detect viruses on the flash drive, however, you observe malfunctions, freezes, the appearance of new folders of unknown purpose, and so on.

That is, the flash drive gives you a feeling of vague doubt about its purity and integrity. In this case, it is recommended to resort to third-party programs to check and disinfect the flash drive.

These can be free, but quite effective and efficient programs for cleaning and optimizing USB drives, such as Doctor Weber, UsbFix Free, Mask S.W.B, TrustPort USB Antivirus and many others.

Using Dr. Weber as an example, I will say that after downloading and running the utility, I select custom scan and then check the USB drive and run the scan.

The program will find, cure and optimize the flash drive, after which it will work much faster.

Conclusion

As you can see, checking USB drives is not a difficult task; be vigilant and prevent your devices from becoming infected with virus programs.

Hello everyone, today I want to tell you a method that protects a flash drive from viruses 100%. Well, about a hundred percent, of course I’m embellishing it, but at 99 percent, you’ll definitely protect it. Both built-in Windows methods will be described, as well as using third-party, free utilities; in short, it will be interesting, especially in light of the latest sensational encryption viruses, because no one wants to be left without their files and photos.

Flash drive without viruses

And so our task is to have a flash drive without viruses, if it is used frequently and on different computers and devices. Let's imagine a situation: Petya has a flash drive, or even a portable device with an SSD drive, what a waste of time. Petya has a lot of software on it, a lot of movies and music. He often goes to see his friends, since the evil Roskomnadzor blocked torrents 🙂, and everyone began to exchange information the old fashioned way, thank God that this is only an example 🙂 and all the torrents are plowing, well, Vasya had a virus on his computer, which due to security of the flash drive, got to Petya, and he brought it home. If he has an antivirus program, okay, he’ll catch it, but if not, he’ll spread it to all his friends, good Petya. But if he had a flash drive that was 100% protected from viruses, then everything would be different; we’ll look at this below.

Here are examples of errors that you may encounter if you have this virus. The first is Editing the registry is prohibited by the System Administrator

Or Task Manager has been disabled by your administrator

If you receive such errors, check with your antivirus

Methods for protecting a flash drive from a virus

Disabling the autorun inf file

And so there are viruses that spread from auto startup, due to autorun.inf file. The virus creates it on a flash drive with the necessary parameters. Knowing this information, we will create our own autorun.inf and prohibit it from being changed by blocking access to it, no access, no virus.

And so you should have a flash drive, insert it into the computer. Open the command line as administrator, I have already described 10 ways to do this, see the link on the left.

My flash drive has the letter D.

In 2011, Microsoft disabled auto-start of flash drives by default due to autorun.inf viruses. To prevent this, we will create a fake directory with this name and give it certain attributes.

In the command prompt window that opens, enter the following lines one by one:

md d:\autorun.inf

attrib +s +h +r d:\autorun.inf

The first command creates a folder on drive D, and the second gives it the necessary attributes, for example h, making it hidden.

This is what the hidden element will look like when you enable the display of hidden files. If the display is turned off, then you won’t see the folder, but you don’t need it, you do it and forget it.

All after these simple methods, you protect the flash drive from viruses, auto launches, if you get an error that a file or folder has already been created, then you can look at them in the root of your flash drive, before that you turn on the display of hidden windows files, and then delete and recreate.

Protecting a flash drive with the Bitdefender USB Immunizer utility

And so the Bitdefender USB Immunizer utility, from one well-known manufacturer of antivirus solutions. The program is completely free and does not require installation, its operating principle is similar to the method described above, it also creates its own autorun.inf file, sets the necessary rights and monitors the recording of malicious code. You can download Bitdefender USB Immunizer (http://labs.bitdefender.com/projects/usb-immunizer/overview/), using the link.

We go to the site and click on the healthy Download button on the right.

Launch the utility and click i Accept.

The program will scan your flash drives and display a complete list of them; unprotected flash drives will be red.

Click on the flash drive you need and the process of protecting it will begin.

After a couple of seconds, the flash drive will turn green, which will mean it is safe.

I advise you to go to settings and set automatic protection for all USB devices.

As you can see, this is also an excellent method of protecting a flash drive from viruses.

Security with Ninja Pendisk utility

We continue further research into computer security and we have the next utility on the way, called Ninja Pendisk. The utility is also completely free and does not require installation; from its functionality it can

  • scan flash drive for viruses
  • auto detection of flash devices
  • diagnoses flash media for protection

As soon as you run the utility, it automatically protects your flash drive from viruses. You can download Ninja Pendisk from the link www.ninjapendisk.com, go to the website and click Download.

After launching Ninja Pendisk, you will see a window prompting you to insert a USB flash drive.

As soon as you insert it, your program will automatically detect it and install the protection, it will take about 3 seconds, and the output will be a secure flash drive.

By setting the necessary rights

So if you don’t need a program to protect your flash drive, then there is another method without using it. The point is to set the necessary rights on the usb device. You must have a flash drive formatted in the NTFS file system; it has long been the default in Windows.

And so open Start > Control Panel > Folder Options

In Windows 7, you can open My Computer, press ALT, select Tools > Folder Options from the top menu

Go to the View tab and uncheck the box, if you want to use the Sharing Wizard (recommended). We save everything.

Now create a Documents folder on your flash drive, for example. Right-click on the flash drive and select properties. Go to the Security tab, delete everyone there except the group everything, then select it and click change. You will be included in the so-called access list or professional ACL. We only set the checkboxes

  • Read and Execute
  • List of folder contents
  • Reading

remove everything else.

Click apply, a warning will pop up, click continue.

Now go to the folder properties, also via right click, security tab. We delete there, as well as everyone except the Everyone group, and check all the boxes for it.

Now, store all the files in the documents folder and not a single virus will be able to write to your root. When you try to write something down, this error window will pop up at the root of the flash drive.

The virus simply does not have rights, and in this way the flash drive is protected from auto-start viruses like autorun.inf. You can return everything back using normal formatting.

Panda USB Vaccine Utility

If you thought that was all, then you were mistaken, there is also a cool program for protecting flash drives called Panda USB Vaccine. Its principle is the same as its predecessors, but there are also advantages, such as disabling flash auto-launch in the system, although this can be done manually, let's download it, you can do this at research.pandasecurity.com. Let's launch, you will be greeted by the installation wizard.

We agree with the license

Set the checkboxes as in the picture below

All Panda USB Vaccine is installed, let's launch it. As you can see, she found the flash drive and on the right there is a Vaccinate USB button

The protection will begin. After which you will have the Vaccinated status

To be honest, in my opinion, the best option is to use the method with rights for groups, and of course you should have an anti-virus package installed on your system, from any company you like, which will still protect you, since nothing stands still, including viruses
